Shell Eco-Marathon

Driving technology innovation for improved energy efficiency

Driving 3,000 kilometers per litre seems an unlikely distance, but that is the standard of fuel economy that the teams competing in the Shell Eco-marathon project try to match. The Shell Eco-marathon...

  • challenges students around the world to design, build, and test vehicles that travel further using less energy.
  • is an educational platform that encourages innovation, reinforces conservation and fosters the development of leading technology for greater energy efficiency.

The principle of the Shell Eco-marathon is simple: to design and build a vehicle that uses the least amount of fuel to travel the farthest distance.

Shell Eco-Marathon 2010 in Germany

Heliocentris successfully supports H2 teams at the European Shell Eco-Marathon 2010

With a team of five persons Heliocentris ran a booth for the second time at the Shell Eco-Marathon from May 5-7. The Marathon was held the second time at the Eurospeedway Lausitz in Germany, 213 teams from 22 countries participated.

On the very first day the record of the last year was broken by the favourite of France’s team "polyjoule" from Nantes. With their fuel cell vehicle the team reached fabulous 4.896 kilometer with the equivalent to one litre fuel and set a new benchmark for the Shell Eco-Marathon.

This equals the distance from the Portuguese Atlantic coast to Moscow or a fuel consumption of 0.02 litre per 100 kilometres.

Even though most of the teams in the fuel cell category were well prepared and had considerable experience in dealing with fuel cell systems, last minute technical support from the fuel cell experts from Heliocentris guaranteed that the vehicles met the strict technical regulations and ran smoothly. From handing out spare parts to technical advice in the teams’ shops, the Heliocentris technicians always got their hands full.

One highlight for Heliocentris was the participation of the Hochschule Lausitz team "LADY". They used the new Nexa® 1200 fuel cell module from Heliocentris for the first time and had a successful first qualifying run that in the end was sufficient for reaching the 22nd place out of 213 teams.

Also the booth of Heliocentris was well frequented. The interest in the new Nexa® 1200 unit and fuel cell technology in general was huge, especially because many of the teams using conventional fuel were looking for future-proof alternatives.

The spirit of the teams and the wonderful atmosphere at the speedway made the Marathon a special event. We would like to share some impressions with you and we are looking forward to the next race!

Shell Eco-Marathon 2009

With a team of two technicians and one product manager Heliocentris ran a small booth at Shell Eco-Marathon, held the first time on the Eurospeedway Lausitz in Germany from May 7-9. The technicians helped with technical problems and supported the teams during the strict inspections.

At their booth, the Heliocentris team presented the new Heliocentris Nexa® 1200 fuel cell module, the successor of the Nexa® Power Module from Ballard.

The atmosphere at the speedway and the closeness to the different teams made the event very special for us. We’d like to share a few impressions with you. Please find a selection of pictures of the Shell Eco-Marathon 2009 below.
